Excessive growth of aquatic weeds is something most pond owners are force to deal with sooner or later. Because most ponds are dug in low area they are a central basin for runoff. Over time the nutrients and fertilizers that are carried in by the runoff cause excessive weed growth. Chemical control of aquatic weeds is currently the most effective way of dealing with these problems.

Algaecides
Algae is by far the most common problem for pond owners. Often pond owners try to rake or pull the algae from their ponds only to have it come back in a few days. Chemical control is the best way to control algae. Algae controls come in both liquid and granular form. Liquid products should be used when the algae is floating on the surface or in shallow water (up to 3-4' deep). Granular controls

should be used in deeper water and for bottom growing algae and chara.

Herbicides
The following products are specialty water treatments that control a wide variety of aquatic plants. While the purchase price initially appears high on products like Sonar and Avast!, the fact that they treat a wide range of plants (often eliminating

the need for multiple chemicals) and the fact that they often provide multiple year control, makes them he best choice in many applications.
