Order of Things To Do For Tree Planting Projects:

1. Contact local forester for tree order form or get numbers of private nurseries. Trees must be ordered in Fall to assure you receive your order on time and for availability.

2. Call your local ASCS office to see if programs are available for Fall sign up of

CRP land. These programs pay you payments on your land for up to 15 years if you plant a combination of half pines and half hardwoods. These programs should be available in Fall. Watch for AFCS flyer in mail.

3. Check with local forester for cost share programs in your area. It's called the forest grand program which cost shares usual 65% of all cost of the tree planting

projects.

4. Order your trees and send in your order form early in the Fall. Make sure you order "graded" trees to assure uniform size and quality.

5. Line up someone to plant your trees the Fall before you intend to plant. Don't wait till last minute, get on list early.

6. Do Fall site preparation which includes killing of grasses and weeds that are established plowing and disking to prepare soil for trees.

7. Either late fall seedling of perennial rye grass or early spring to keep weeds down between tree rows.

8. Talk to your local forester about managed forest law program, which

reduces your property taxes per acre. Your land is closed to the public on this program but you must enter 10 acres or more of forest land and up to 80 acres can be entered as closed to public.
